Vocal Effects Chain Explained: Gate, EQ, Compressor, Reverb & Delay
A "vocal chain" is simply the set of processors you apply to a vocal, in a specific order, to take it from a raw take to a sound that's ready for the final mix. The order isn't arbitrary: each effect sets up the signal for the next one. Here's what each one does and why it usually sits where it does in the chain.
1. Gate
It goes first because it works on the rawest version of the signal. A gate cuts or attenuates the signal when it falls below a threshold, removing background noise, unwanted breaths, or room hum between phrases. Apply it after compression instead, and the compressor will have already lifted that background noise along with the vocal, making the gate far less effective.
2. EQ
Many engineers apply an early subtractive EQ to remove problem frequencies (resonances, excess low end) before compressing, and a later additive EQ to add brightness and presence once the dynamics are already under control. Having a flexible parametric EQ at both ends of the chain gives you far more control than a single pass.
3. Compressor
The compressor comes in after the signal is cleaned up, to even out volume between words and phrases. Moderate ratios (3:1-4:1) with attack and release tuned to the pace of the vocal deliver even dynamics without squashing the natural performance. It's common to use two stages of gentle compression instead of one aggressive stage, for a more transparent result.
4. Reverb
Reverb places the vocal inside an acoustic space. It comes after dynamics because compressing a signal that already has reverb on it also compresses the reverb tail, which can sound unnatural or "pumped." Using it as a send rather than inserting it directly gives you much finer control over how much wet signal gets added.
5. Delay
Delay usually sits alongside reverb — sometimes before it, so its repeats also pick up some reverb, sometimes after, depending on the effect you're after. A short tempo-synced slap delay adds thickness and presence without sounding like an obvious echo; longer delays create space and rhythmic texture.
Why does order matter?
Every effect changes the signal the next one receives. Compressing before EQ changes how the compressor reacts to certain frequencies; adding reverb before compression distorts the reverb tail. There's no single correct recipe for every case, but understanding this logic lets you make an informed call about which order to use for the result you're after.
